we got to Split at 10:20 pm. I checked the time lighting a cigarette, after we discovered that we are on Vukovarska street, but not quite in the place we should be. I texted our host and after a while he promised his friends were coming for us by car. so we waited.
when they finally found us, they took us straight to Adham’s place and it didn’t seem very far. we had a proposition to join all of them for the party in some place near Split, but we were damn tired, so the only thing we dreamt of was getting some sleep in a real bed (or couch). Adham told us to leave the key under the doormat, when we’d be leaving Split the next day and he left the apartment totally to us. I took the first shower since Wednesday morning (it was Friday) and fell asleep a few minutes after 11 pm.
the next morning we left around 9:30 to sightsee the city. then we went back to give back the key to Adham, who came back earlier than he expected and again we were on the way to the centre of Split. the Old Town was easy reachable and very pretty, but we couldn’t spend too much time in there, so we decided to eat some lunch and set out for Dubrovnik not later than at 3 pm.
as you can imagine we had some problems keeping to our plan. after we ate cevapi in some bar and we were about to finish our beers, we happened to meet a guy who wanted to drink with us another one. the story is pretty simple - Anna had a strong inner need for a label from Ozujsko beer, which stood on the Croatian guy’s table. so I came to him to ask if I could have the bottle for my friend. the guy said yes and a few seconds later he was already sitting at the table with us, trying to speak with us using bad English mixed with Croatian.
finally, we said goodbye to the guy and went to look for some transport to the nearest place from which we could catch something to Dubrovnik. after visiting two bus stops, waiting for I-don’t-know-how-long on the second one and then travelling in loops from one side of Split to the other, we ended up close to Magistrala, which was one of the two main roads to Dubrovnik.
so then we only had to find a gas station and some person willing to take us further. at 9:10 pm when I already lost all of my hope and almost fell asleep on the pavement of the gas station, I opened my eyes and saw a car. the young marriage travelling with this car was so nice to take us to Makarska. they actually took us further than they wanted to go themselves, ‘cos they were trying to find a gas station for us. lovely people!
it was around midnight and we were stuck in the middle of nowhere between mountains and Adriatic sea. nobody was passing by, so we ate ice cream called Snjegulica (or similar, I don’t remember the exact name) and I went to ask a gas station worker if we can put our tent on their lawn. I was pretty amazed when he said yes, but well, we had some really good sleep till 6 am.
